A History of the Heads Up Poker Championship

Updated January 17, 2009

The Heads Up Poker Championship has been in existence longer than the WSOP event with the same name (at least we're better than them in some regard!).

The first event was held in April 2006 and was the very first Circuit event played under the new Circuit format. A total of 8 players came together to play at this first annual event. The winner of the event was Tom Taylor who won the event with pocket kings, so far the best starting hand to ever take down a Circuit event.

The second event was held in April of 2007 and saw a small increase of players with 10. Most players had a first round bye but Tom Taylor, who won the event in 2006, lost in the 2nd round. The winner was Frank Ermel who won the best 2 out of 3 heads up championship while losing the first round. The loser of this event, Chris Sepcsik, who as of August 2008, hasn't won a Circuit event yet and this was his closest to a win.

The third event was held April 2008 and had a small decrease of participants with 9. Josh Weber has the best distinction in this event to be the first one out all three years running in the first round. Some grueling pairings were matched and previous winners Tom Taylor and Frank Ermel didn't even make it past the first round. The winner of the event, Chris Loggia, took down the tournament and the title of Heads Up Champion for 2008. The runner up, Mike Leatherwood, received another second place (what a surprise).

With the 2009 Circuit schedule up and it being on the list, this event will take place for its fourth year. With a format change in the works, will we see Josh Weber not end up in last place? Can there ever be a repeat winner for this event? Will Chris Sepcsik EVER take down a title? I will have to go with a "no" on all three.
